0-10 Volt Converter

The DX10V converts a DMX-512 input to a variable 0 to 10 volt analog output. Control 0-10 volt LED drivers or dimmers from a DMX lighting board or DMX controller.  Each output can source up to 20mA and sink up to 10mA. Each output is assigned to a consecutive DMX channel and will vary from 0 to 10 volts (12 to 24 volt options available) in respect to the corresponding DMX channel level's.  Several options and output count variations depending on enclosure style.

0-10V Options:

ELM Video Technology offers 3 styles of 0-10 Volt controls

  1. 0-10 control voltage with up to 24 channels per circuit - standard 0 to 10 analog variation in respect the DMX level
  2. 0-10 control voltage with up to 8 channels per circuit with switch to ground function - standard 0 to 10 analog variation in respect the DMX level with a true relay switch to ground below 5%
  3. 0-10 control voltage with up to 8 channels per circuit with power relay's - standard 0 to 10 analog variation in respect the DMX level, and power relays that source the fixture (LED driver) power and activate above 5%.

To determine which version is needed:

Check the driver specs under the 0-10 control section. If it states 100% - 0% then option 1 is all that is needed.

If it states 100% - 10% or 100%-1%, AND you want the LED to turn completely off then option 2 or 3 is needed. Option 3, the power relay's will work but requires electrical wiring to control fixture power. Option 2 may work to may be more economical. To determine if option 2 will (plausibly) work:

  • To test with an existing installation, set the DMX level to zero. If the LEDs are still illuminated connect the 0-10V pink (or purple) wire to the ground connection (gray). If the LEDs turn off then option 2, switch to ground, should work.
  • To test uninstalled fixtures or drivers, connect a 10 volt source with a 10K ohm potentiometer to vary the 0-10V input  (pink or purple wire) and test dimming the LED. When turned all the way down and the lights are still illuminated, connect the 0-10V pink (or purple) wire to the ground. If the LEDs turn off then this PCB should work.

Usage Examples:

This unit is most popular controlling 0-10V LED drivers. Other uses include: trigger/control devices up to 10V, rapid switch equipment or lights, control water fountain solenoids or SSR's (Solid State Relays). The Start Channel is assigned by dip switches 1 ~ 9, DMX512 CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT TABLE. For example if the DMX start channel is assigned to 10, and the level on channel 10 is 127, then the 1st output will be +5 volts, level of 0 = 0 volts, and a level of 255 = 10 volts etc.

Note: DX10V output specifications: insure your controlled equipment, LED drivers, dimmers etc. operate within the specifications of the unit, over driving may cause failure

FAQ

Q. Will the DX10V control and work with my equipment?

A. Our DX10V unit is designed to control many different types of equipment such as 0-10V controlled LED drivers and 0-10V motor controls. To determine compatibility, examine the specifications for your equipment and insure it doesn't draw more than 20mA at 10 volts and no more than 10mA at 0 volts. These specifications may not be accessible and may require a technical call to the manufacturer.

Q. Will the DX10V outputs go all the way down to 0 volts?

A. For most practical purposes yes our controller will go to zero. The actual voltage is 10 - 40mV and should be considered OFF by most 0-10V controlled products.

Q. Why won't my 0-10 volt controlled LED lights turn completely off?

A. Most LED drivers we have researched dim from 100% to 10%, and will not turn off completely. This is a limitation of the LED driver. To determine if specific LED drivers will turn completely off, examine the specifications of the driver, under the 0-10V dimming section, look for ranges such as 100%-10%, 100%-1%, or 100%-0%. These specifications may not be shown and may require contacting the technical department of the manufacturer. If it's determined that the driver will not dim to 0%, then another option is to turn the power off to the LED driver(s) when the 0-10V input goes below 1 volt. See our DX10V-SG  (0-10 volt output unit with switch to ground below 10%) or DX10V-PRL products (0-10 volt output unit with parallel relays that provide power switching below the 10% range).

Q. Can I gang or connect more than one driver per output of the DX10V?

A. Yes, ganging should work for 0-10V input devices, just insure they don't draw more than 20mA at 10 volts and no more than 10mA at 0 volts. These specifications may not be shown and may require a technical call to the manufacturer. Typically drivers will draw about 1mA to 1.5mA at 10 volts, so it is plausible that 12 or more could be controlled per output. To insure these specs are not exceeded it is recommended to connect the drivers as desired and measure the current at 10 volts AND then measure at 0 volts.
